1970s Classic Television On DVD Bring Variety Stars Like Sonny And Cher Back To Fans

Imagine a family, all sitting around the TV, possibly the only TV in the house. Dad is holding the remote control, which everyone refers to as “the clicker.” The remote has only two functions. One of the functions turns the TV off and on. The other changes the channels, all 7 or 8 of them, with a click of a button. Now try to imagine what that family is watching. Are you imagining them watching one of the classic TV shows from the 1970’s?

In the 1970s most families had one, maybe two televisions in the house, and the second television was usually stashed away in mom and dad’s room where they could watch the classic shows that the kids couldn’t watch yet like Maude or Soap. The televisions in the house might have even shown the programs in black and white.

What kept families glued to these televisions that had only a handful of channels, an ancient clicker, and frequently no color? The classic TV shows from the 1970s, of course. There were so many family-friendly shows in a variety of genres.

For families that enjoyed comedies, the 1970s had some of the most memorable sitcoms. The families in the ’70’s learned all about families in the 1950’s by watching the wildly popular Happy Days and its equally popular spin off Laverne and Shirley. Happy Days also launched the career of comedian Robin Williams who went on to star in another spin off of the show – Mork and Mindy.

Other family friendly classic television shows of the 1970’s include The Partridge Family (with teen hearth throb David Cassidy), the show that introduced us to John Travolta, Welcome Back Kotter, One Day at a Time, Chico and the Man, The Odd Couple, Good Times, WKRP in Cincinnati, What’s Happening, Three’s Company and The Jeffersons.

Families with older children enjoyed comedies with a social conscience like All in the Family, Maude, Barney Miller or Mash. These classic 1970s sitcoms dealt with the social issues of the day in poignant yet comedic way.

Families also had several variety shows to choose from for their viewing pleasure. Classic variety shows such as The Donny and Marie Show and The Sonny and Cher Show had music, comedy sketches and popular guest stars each week. The Carol Burnett Show brought together some of the 1970’s funniest comedians each week and The Muppet Show combined the genius of Jim Henson’s fantastic creations with musical and comedy guest stars sharing the stage with Kermit, Miss Piggy and Animal.

There were plenty of one hour family dramas, too. Eight is Enough, Little House on the Prairie, and The Waltons were just a few of the classic television dramas that brought families together in front of the television each week.

There was also room for crime fighting and action heroes in the classic 1970s TV shows. The world learned what bionics was in The Six Million Dollar Man and its spin off The Bionic Woman. Each week families would tune in to see how Lee Majors and Jamie Sommers would use their bionic eyes and ears. CHiPs gave us a glimpse into the life of California Highway Patrol officers. Starsky and Hutch chased bad buys in their hot rod and BJ and the Bear tracked down bad guys in an 18 wheeler.

Two other classic television shows from that era that can’t be defined by any of these other genres were The Love Boat and Fantasy Island. These shows were the place for the stars of yesteryear and the stars of the current era to make guest appearances, several at a time. For years, families stayed home on Saturday nights just to see who would get off the plane onto the island or turn up Julie the Cruise Director’s guest list.

In today’s modern times, there are hundreds of channels on each of the four or more TV sets in most homes. Yet, there seems to never be anything to watch, especially something that the whole family can enjoy together. Many of these classic TV shows from the 1970’s are now on DVD and can be bought or rented either online or at a store. Why not consider getting a classic TV DVD for your family this Friday night instead of the usually family movie?

The Cuddly Vauxhall Corsa

Posted By Dozer
Categorized Under: Fraggle Rock Theme

I don’t know if you’ve seen the latest Vauxhall Corsa adverts, but they essentially contain the Corsa, cuddly toys that are alive and a lot of shouting “C’MON!” This tells me that either: the Corsa is aimed at art students who also think the teletubbies are a subliminal mind-bending piece of programming, or aimed at kids who are too young to: a) afford the car and b) can’t drive it even if they could afford it.

Despite this, I walked past a shop the other day not selling the Corsa but the cuddly toys themselves. And when I say selling, I mean selling by the hundreds as they flew off the shelves. It appears the advert is far wider reaching than I first thought and re-affirms the power of the medium and how one well crafted idea can yield more sales and interest regardless of whether the product is good or not.

Remember Ben Affleck and his clicker in the Lynx deodorant adverts? On a simple journey through town he clocked up hundreds of admiring glances from women which he recorded on the clicker. At the end of the advert however his score is beaten by a man who isn’t a Hollywood A-lister who makes women tremble, but one who wears Lynx deodorant. Cue stacks of men buying Lynx with the promise of their very own clicker to follow in the mail.

Remember ITV Digital? They may be bust now, but upon their launch of digital television as we know it now, they used British comedian Johnny Vegas combined with a woollen monkey ingeniously called ‘Monkey’. This cute fellow has managed to avoid becoming typecast and now advertises the tea – PG Tips. Both companies knew that scores of the population young and old would buy up a digital box or boxes of PG Tips to gets their hands on this must-have toy not available in normal shops. Unfortunately for ITV Digital they ran out of monkeys, hence their bankruptcy. PG Tips have been shrewder in their stock purchasing I trust.

Finally we move to the world of clothing. Not content with using a song that became one of the biggest selling singles ever, ‘Spaceman’ by Babylon Zoo, Levi Jeans have also had their time aboard the cuddly toy bandwagon. I can’t remember precisely what Flat Eric was but this cuddly critter was created by Jim Henson, the bloke behind The Muppets. Thinking about it, Flat Eric wasn’t meant to be a cuddly version of a real-life creature just cute. It worked too, with shops selling Eric and in turn Levi’s at a ferocious pace. Suddenly Vauxhall’s idea doesn’t seem such a bad one.

Beneath all this commercialism, the Corsa isn’t a bad car either. In fact it’s one of the best in its class. Let’s start inside out for a change. The interior belies the type of car you are driving and is without doubt the best Vauxhall have produced in its hatchback range. All shiny metals and pitch black materials are used and replace the cheap plastics found in the predecessor. The rev counter and speedometer dominate the dashboard as they should, with a simple white on black combination. The steering wheel has the controls for the CD player and is adjustable to fit all shapes and sizes of driver.

As with the current Vauxhall line-up the styling of the Corsa doesn’t disappoint. There’s no doubt the three-door version looks far better from the side than the five-door derivative which somehow looks more elongated than just the extra door. The front and rears are identical on both and it’s this styling that will surely entice customers into the showroom. The big headlights sweep up the sides of the car, with the traditional Vauxhall grill divided in two by the front bumper in a similar manner to that of the Volkswagen Golf.

I drove the 1.3 litre diesel version which was economical, returning roughly 47mpg although this is down on what the handbook states. My right foot is as heavy as cement mind. The Corsa was responsive considering the engine size, but crucially for a car that’ll be scuttling around potholes in the city, the ride comfort was far better than the VXR and SRi versions of the same car, without losing too much of the sporty handling these versions have in spades.

All in all the new Corsa was a pleasant surprise considering how much Vauxhall seem to hide the car behind their cuddly friends. The hatchback marketplace is more crowded than a sale at Harrods, but if you’re considering your hatchback options, you’d be wise to pop into Vauxhall. Cuddly toys not included in the starting price of £7,795.

Mark Creese recalls various marketing campaigns including the recent Corsa cuddly creatures the Corsa can be found at West End Vauxhall

Avenue Q

Posted By Dozer
Categorized Under: Fraggle Rock Theme

Holding the notable position of 26th longest running musical in Broadway history, while winning several Tony Awards and the awards for the Best Musical, Avenue Q is an exasperating musical conceived by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, who wrote the music and lyrics, with the direction by Jason Moore. The show was produced by and opened at the Off-Broadway Vineyard Theatre in March 2003. The show has initiated a 2005 Las Vegas production, a 2006 West End production and various international productions. A U.S. national tour began in July 2007 and will end in May 2009.

As stated in the Broadway Playbill, the scene is a fictional street located “in an outer borough of New York City.” Manhattan, the center of New York City, has Avenues A, B, C, and D, making up the Alphabet City neighborhood. Alternately, Avenue Q could be in the Midwood and Gravesend area of Brooklyn, where there are also Avenues A, B, C, etc. all the way up to Avenue Z, with a few exceptions. One of the exceptions is Avenue Q. The Q subway train travels through this neighborhood, whose symbol used to be a Q in an orange circle resembling the Avenue Q logo. However, the authors have stated that Avenue Q is fictional and is not related to this or any other particular street.

The show is largely inspired by Sesame Street and follows the similar style too as most of the characters in the show are puppets and the set depicts several tenements on a rundown street in an “outer borough” of New York City, both the live characters and puppet characters sing, and short animated video clips are played as part of the story. Also, several characters are recognizably parodies of classic Sesame Street characters: for example, the roommates Rod and Nicky are versions of Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie, and Trekkie Monster is based on Cookie Monster. However, the characters are in their twenties and thirties and face adult problems instead of those faced by pre-schoolers, thus making the show more suited for the adults who grew up with Sesame Street.

The characters use profane and outrageously explicit language while the songs are mostly concerned with adult themes. A recurring theme is the central character’s search for a “purpose.” Since the musical soundtrack for it was released, the song “The Internet is For Porn” has become particularly popular. According to the official site, the musical is appropriate for both adults and mature teenagers. The show is an explicit homage to Sesame Street. But unlike Sesame Street, Avenue Q openly addresses adult topics such as racism, pornography, and homosexuality; in fact, because of its adult language and content and “full puppet nudity”, the show specifically disclaims any connection to either Sesame Workshop or The Jim Henson Company.

The characters who are not puppets relate to the puppets, rather than to the actors holding them. The puppets speak directly to each other and never to the actors operating them. During the course of the show, a puppet character may be operated by more than one of the actor-operators, although the same actor creates the voice for a particular puppet even if he or she is not holding the puppet at the time. The puppeteers wear nondescript black/gray clothing while the three human characters are dressed in bright colors, as are the puppets.

Avenue Q has a distinct plot that engulfs the audience into its garb. Princeton, a recent college graduate, is looking for an affordable apartment in New York City. At Avenue Q, he meets a group of neighbors: Kate Monster, a single assistant kindergarten teacher; Nicky and Rod, two long-time roommates; Brian, an unemployed comedian; Christmas Eve, Brian’s Japanese fiancée, who is a therapist but has no clients; and Gary Coleman, former child star of the TV show Diff’rent Strokes, now the apartment superintendent. They all complain about their lives and all agree that Gary’s life sucks the most. Princeton takes an apartment, and everyone welcomes him to the block. Thus a true depiction of the frustration and cruelty that life inflicts upon common men is thus portrayed.

The recurrent adult theme can be witnessed when the characters expose themselves and their thoughts to the public. Rod is reading a book about “Broadway Musicals of the 1940s” when he is interrupted by Nicky, who wants to share a story about a gay man he met on the subway. Rod gets defensive at the mention of homosexuality, and Nicky assures his roommate that he would have no problem accepting Rod.

Secound production for Avenue Q was organised at Wynn Las Vegas hotel and casino in Las Vegas on September 8, 2005. Primarily the production had an “exclusive” contract that prohibited Avenue Q tours in North America. New theatre was built specially having capacity of 1200 seat for audience for this show

In mid-January 2006, the show was more organized by cutting 90 minutes, removing the interval and trimming of 10-15 minutes. The Logo had “Q” in white letters engraved in front. Due to outstanding performance the show was reported to have been more profitable, citation needed it closed on May 28, 2006, after only a nine-month run. The closing of the show in Las Vegas released the Avenue Q producers from their exclusivity agreement, have positive impact and opened new way for a U.S. national tour or other U.S. productions.

The first public production of this show was in June 2006 in London’s West End at the Noël Coward Theatre. The show previewed on June 1, 2006 and opened on 28 June 2006. Avenue Q is booked in London until April 25, 2009. In order to gain popularity the production uses a different logo for the show as well as the original logo. The original logo is styled after the New York City Subway system graphics, and so it would have little resonance with a London audience.

U.S./Canada Tour.

Left Handed Celebrities Making a Left Handed Mark on the World

Posted By Dozer
Categorized Under: Fraggle Rock Theme

Left handed celebrities have graced movie screens, broadway shows, and T.V. since the beginning of the theatrical arts. Charlie Chaplin is one of the first well known southpaws who entered the world of theater, and after him came many many more. Lefties tend to be very creative which is an important attribute in acting, singing, etc.

Fan favorite left handed actors include Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts and Bruce Willis. Other great lefties are the late George Burns, Michael Landon and the creator of the muppets, Jim Henson. This star-studded list of celebrities reads like a Who’s Who of All Time Hollywood Legends.

Left handers are more inclined to go into the arts, music or anything that requires us to use our imagination. Some current theories say we are moving from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age as described in an article by Daniel H. Pink, Revenge of the Right Brain. He suggests that the outsourcing of routine analytical jobs will continue and companies will rely more heavily on creative and imaginative people to sell their products or services. This could be very good for us southpaws :)

Two recent American Idol standouts David Cook and David Archuleta battled it out on stage to see who was the first left handed American Idol. Even though David Cook won they can both be added to the growing list of famous lefties.

I should also mention the musical contributions of Beethoven, Jimi Hendrix and Paul McCartney. Yes, they all used their dominate left hand to rein over the musical world.

Left handed celebrities have made an important impact on the theatrical arts community and will continue to due so for years to come. Kinda gives you another reason to be proud of being left handed.

This year Elmo is back and going strong. Just in case you do not know, Elmo is a character of the Muppets puppets created by Jim Henson. Elmo is best known from the longest running educational programming in the US for children called Sesame Street.

Elmo Live is an educational toy that sings and dances. Elmo is a lovable character that comes to life by the means of the latest technology. For instance, he can get in and out of his chair, sing, dance and wave, while sitting he can cross and uncross his legs. It is very easy to forget this little guy is a robot since he possesses such a remarkable personality. Your children will be entertained for hours while playing with Elmo Live. Children enjoy watching Elmo move and perform various actions. The perfect companion for your small children is Elmo Live.

Elmo Live features touch sensors all over its body, which causes the toy to react to any touch and is very interactive.
